Our Garden Journal:

July 1, 2010

What a wonderful garden this year !  So far conditions have been perfect and everything is growing well including the weeds.  No Pests have bothered us not even the nasty cucumber beetles of last year. Looks like we are in for a hot spell, so we will be watching water levels to make sure everything stays on track.  A couple of our banty chickens have found the garden and seem to be picking up insects and leaving the lettuce alone.  The only problem is that they like to scratch in the straw mulch spreading it away from the plants.... sigh! nothing is ever perfect.

Interesting how a gardeners week revolves around rain!  but it is a double edged sword, the garden is flourishing but so are the weeds.  Keeps the gardener busy.  Our Dill had visitors this week, lovely caterpillars that looked like this  apparently black Swallowtail butterfly larvae.  Well the gardener didn't have the heart to kill them so picked each one and took them to another part of the farm.  They didn't find their way back!  Those pesky white butterflies were seen on the cabbage as well.  Time to keep our eyes open and inspect the cabbage for little green worms.

Lucy our faithful companion (German Shepherd) in the Garden is learning to walk carefully between the rows.  Sometimes she's gets over exuberant and lands on a row, mostly she just waits in the shade in the long grass for the gardener to emerge and throw her ball for her. She loves raw beans, but will have to wait like everyone else!

RAIN! what a wonderful sight.  Seems everywhere but Arnprior has seen rain lately, This will spruce up the garden and make the weeds grow!  The ducks found the garden couple of weeks ago and together with their three ducklings had a feast of young lettuce.  We have recovered from that now! Our resident robins are busy looking for worms to feed their youngsters, they are not concerned about us! they keep us company.

June 22-26, 2009

Well the weather is warming up and the tomatoes are very happy! It is quite dry in the garden  despite all the rain in Ottawa, it just keeps going around Arnprior and we are watering to keep the plants growing and flourishing.  Still the late spring has put us a couple of weeks behind schedule.  We will have to be patient.

June 8-12, 2009

The week will be cooler than usual.  Spinach and radishes will appreciate that.  Finally the rain has subsided and he garden is drying out. All the bedding plants have been planted, lettuce is on its way and other seeds are in the ground.  We are starting to see the peas  peaking through the soil as well as the beans.  Carrots, spinach and radishes are also making an appearance.
